Originally announced as a two-part drama, Apparitions (Thursday 13th November) is a major new drama series starring Martin Shaw as Father Jacob, a Roman Catholic priest who is drawn against his will into the world of exorcism.
The show was previously intended for transmission in early 2008 but was delayed and re-commissioned to allow a longer, six-part run.
The idea for the series came from Shaw who had long wanted to play an exorcist and developed by writer/director Joe Ahearne for Lime Pictures. Ahearne is no stranger to mixing the modern world and fantasy having previously been responsible for Channel 4’s Vampire Ultraviolet.
Tony Wood, Creative Director of Lime Pictures, says Ahearne “has created a gripping story of intrigue and mystery which raises as many questions as it answers.”
The cast includes Michelle Joseph as Jacob’s aide, Sister Anne, who chooses to look for good rather than evil but remains resolutely loyal to Jacob and Luigi Diberti as Monsignor Vincenzo, Rome’s chief exorcist who is soon to retire and wants Jacob to take over from him.
Wood says fans of Shaw can look forward to a “a very different and darker acting challenge to that which the audience will have seen him in before.”
