Blogs, social networks and video sharing sites such as YouTube are bristling with reports of sightings of mysterious robots in cities and at famous landmarks around the world, including Tokyo, Berlin, Rome, and Barcelona. From around the globe, ordinary members of the public have been posting videos and photos of these sightings.
Perhaps the most bizarre sighting so far was shot by fans at the Champion’s League final in Rome. A sighting from Tokyo has been uploaded to YouTube, with more videos posted from Berlin and Barcelona. A number of more subtle sightings have been made in Sydney, Perth and Machu Pichu.
The most recent sightings have been in France where two model-airplane-enthusiasts watched their airplane crash land, and transform into a robot and the UK where there was a similar incident involving a scooter turning into a robot-type creature.
With the sightings coinciding with the launch of the new Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen film, could they be part of a viral campaign designed to whip up the fans?
Heath Tyldesley, marketing director for Paramount Pictures International told us: “Extending the narrative of the film into the real world prior to a film’s release is a great way of building buzz and awareness amongst fans and viewers, rewarding them for their engagement with the first film. Directors are really embracing broadening the platforms of the films narrative to include the web and Michael Bay is no exception”.
