A new ‘mini’ version of the iPad will be unveiled in October, according to tech news site All Things Digital.
Apple is already scheduled to hold a press event on September 12th where is expected to unveil a new version of the iPhone.
Some reports have previously suggested the firm would also announce an 8” version of the iPad at the same event. However All Things Digital reports the second device will in fact be unveiled “a second special event, which sources said is currently scheduled for October.”
The existing 10″ model continues to dominate tablet sales but Apple is faxing increased competition from smaller and cheaper devices powered by Google’s Android Operating System (OS).
A smaller iPad is likely to retail for far less than the current model, allowing Apple to compete with devices such as Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7.
