David Tennant’s long awaited arrival as the Tenth Doctor has helped the BBC claim victory in the Christmas Day ratings war with ITV.

Tennant’s debut proves a hit with viewers

According to overnight figures ‘The Christmas Invasion’ was watched by an average of 9.4 million viewers, peaking at 9.8 million. and placing it second for the day behind the corporation’s ‘EastEnders’.

With over 42% of the audience the seasonal special beat ITV’s ‘Coronation Street’ into 3rd place.

ITV’s ‘Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ which aired opposite Doctor Who was watched by only 6.3 million.

Overall the BBC has seven shows in the day’s top ten most watched programmes. The overnight figures do not include those who recorded the show for later watching.

The full top ten are:

1. EastEnders (BBC1) – 10.1 million
2. Doctor Who (BBC1) – 9.4 million
3. Coronation Street (ITV1) – 9.4 million
4. Two Ronnies Christmas Sketchbook (BBC1) – 7.9 million
5. Shrek (BBC1) – 6.7 million
6. Emmerdale (ITV1) – 6.6 million
7. Toy Story (BBC1) – 6.5 million
8. Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (ITV1) – 6.3 million
9. The Queen’s Speech (BBC1) – 6.2 million
10. BBC News 6.50pm (BBC1) – 6.2 million
