BBC One and Doctor Who have been named the best terrestrial channel and best programme respectively at Edinburgh TV Festival while ITV2 was named best digital-only channel.
BBC One controller Peter Fincham said the accolades were “the best thing that’s happened to me all month”. Recent weeks have seen the channel come under fire for a faked ‘competition’ on Blue Peter and and the misleading editing of a trailer for the flagship show looking into the life of HM The Queen.
However the corporation was strongly defended by Doctor Who producer Phil Collinson who said without it “Doctor Who would never be made, would never be so good and would never be so well supported”.
The shortlists for each category was drawn up after a public vote. The best channels were decided by he festival’s executive committee while the best show award was decided by 200 young people representing the next generation of TV talent.
