Celebrated comedy actress Catherine Tate is to appear alongside David Tennant in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, The Runaway Bride.
According to the commentary for tonight’s episode her character is called Donna.
Ms Tate is a graduate of the Central School of Speech and Drama and Royal National Theatre and spent a year with the Royal Shakespeare Company before taking up a career in stand-up comedy.
Earlier this year her eponymously named BBC Two series won the 2006 Royal Television Society awards for best entertainment show and best comedy performance.
BBC Entertainment news quotes Tate as saying she “was holding out for summer season at Wigan rep but as a summer job this’ll do,”
Russell T Davies told the BBC that “Doctor Who and Catherine Tate is just the most irresistible combination, a genuine treat for Christmas viewing.
“After two years of travelling with Rose, the Tardis is in for a bumpy ride with Donna on board.”
Past non-comedy appearances include roles in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Bleak House and ITVs Marple series.
Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride airs on BBC One, Christmas 2006.
