Civilization 4 Gold Edition (finally) comes to Mac

May 12, 2009 by Martin Hoscik · 5 Comments

civ4_coverI’m a long time fan of the Civilization franchise, I remember being captivated by the original game and waited with a rarely experienced level of expectation for Civ 2, Civ 3 didn’t quite do it for me though I enjoyed the near-series entry Alpha Centauri and, after a steep learning curve, loved many of the changes in Civ 4.

I’m also one of those odd people who like the console and DS versions of Revolution

But because I made the conversion to Macs a few years back I’ve been missing the fun of Civ 4 because, unlike the PC version, it’s still selling at the original full retail price. Whereas for £10 or so a PC player will get Civ 4 and both the Warlords and Beyond the Sword expansion packs, Mac users have been asked to pay almost £40 for Civ 4 and another £20 for Warlords.

That’s improved a bit in recent days with the release of Civilization 4 Gold Edition, selling for less than £35 it includes the base game and Warlords though not, disappointingly, Beyond the Sword.

It’s still not quite as good a deal as Windows players get but it’s better value than many Mac games tend to be.

I’ve never understood why Mac games are so expensive for so long, it takes much longer for any price reductions to come along and surely acts as a sales deterrent?  The innocent in me wonders how charging so much that large numbers of people are put off of buying has a positive impact on profits.

Maybe sometime soon Colonization might also find its way to Macs?

  1. Im one of those put off buying games on a mac because of their price. The last game I bought for a mac was the sims for my CRT iMac in 2001…

The games are there, the customers are there its just a shame the publishers aren’t prepared to give it a punt

You could always add windows xp via boot camp and get the PC version. It’s what I’m considering at the moment.

  3. I thought about it but I do’t have a copy of XP SP2 and the cost of one is much more than the cost of the Gold edition.

  4. Boot camp is becoming a nit of a “cop out” for games developers, I was really looking forward to Trainz on the mac but they stopped development not long after boot camp was introduced – Pity as I have no intention of partitioning

just wondering if anyone knows if or when they plan on releasing beyond the sword expansion pack for mac? i dont know if they already have, but i cant seem to find it anywhere.
