Dirk Maggs brings Douglas Adams’s much loved detective Dirk Gently to life in this 6-part, full cast, BBC Radio 4 production.
Gently has an unshakeable belief in the interconnectedness of all things but his ‘Holistic’ Detective Agency’s only success seems to be tracking down missing cats for old ladies.
But that all changes when Dirk stumbles upon an old friend behaving bizarrely, and is drawn into a four-billion year old mystery that must be solved if the human race is to avoid immediate extinction.
To increase the attractiveness of the title so soon after its radio broadcast – the final episode is due to be broadcast only the night before release – this CD version contains almost an hour of unbroadcast material.
The cast is headed by Harry Enfield who presents Gently as a thoroughly likable chap and – to the relief of this listener – manages to avoid inviting any thought of his famous television characters.
Also in the cast are Andrew Sachs as Professor Chronotis (a character who appeared in the untransmitted Adams scripted Doctor Who story Shada), Olivia Colman as Dirk’s assistant Janice and Billy Boyd as Richard MacDuff.
One problem with adapting works from iconic writers such as Adams is that they can be off putting with potential buyers and listeners imagining that an in-depth knowledge of the source novel and author’s body of work is essential to appreciating the work.
This is absolutely NOT the case, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is a fun, welcoming and accessible dramatisation capable of being enjoyed by anyone with a keen sense of humour and an appreciation of good writing and plotting.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency will be available from 8th November
