A classic Doctor Who story starring William Hartnell and Peter Butterworth comes to DVD this month.
The Time Meddler marks the first time a Time Lord other than the Doctor (and possibly his granddaughter) appeared in the show. Butterworth guest stars as ‘The Meddling Monk’ who plans to interfere with time by changing the outcome of the Battle of Hastings.
As always there’s a slew of extra features including an obituary to Doctor Who producer Verity Lambert who died recently, a feature on the First Doctor’s depiction in comic strips.
This is the final adventure Lambert produced and she’s present on the commentary alongside actor Peter Purves who plays companion Stephen, script editor Donald Tosh and designer Barry Newman to discuss the making of the story.
The work involved in tidying up the episodes for DVD release is looked at with a short feature showing segments of footage before and after restoration.
The design on this story is superb, many of the exterior sets are stunningly convincing. The ‘tampering with time’ plot is pretty straightforward but enjoyable all the same and the interplay and chemistry between Hartnell and Butterworth is a delight.
