Can’t say I’m too impressed by the news that Channel 4’s alternative Christmas message is to be delivered by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
We all know the channel often does things for pure effect and that the more outraged society is the happier channel bosses are but even by 4’s standards this is pretty puerile.
Iran is widely believed to have stirred up and possibly funded the insurgents in Iraq who are responsible for the deaths of British troops and last year famously captured 15 Royal Navy personnel.
For a publicly owned broadcaster to give airtime to Ahmadinejad on Christmas day is just wrong.
Interviewed in a formal setting where he can be questioned on his policies, I’d have no issue with Channel 4 devoting a whole day to him but to give him what appears to be a soap box is indefensible.
Recently Channel 4 have been casting around for politicians stupid enough to stump up public money to underwrite their overpriced acquisitions of reality TV formats and US shows, but they seem incapable of acting in the responsible way required of any recipient of taxpayer funding.
The case for privatisation looks ever more persuasive.
