First announced last year, the new Freeview Play service connects to the user’s broadband service to offer integrated access to popular catch-up players such as iPlayer and ITV Player via a scroll-back TV guide.
The UK’s largest free-to-air TV platform doesn’t make its own devices but instead allows authorised manufacturers to use its logo on equipment which meets a minimum technical standard.
The broadcaster already operates a number of successful pay-TV channels, including National Geographic, and will bolster its line-up with YourTV, which is “primarily aimed” at female audiences.
The service combines catch-up TV from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 with aerial-delivered live channels and will compete alongside Freesat and YouView.
