Torchwood, the BBC’s hit spin-off from Doctor Who, will return in January with a new series of adventures and a specially edited pre-watershed repeat.
As previously conformed Captain Jack Harness (John Barrowman), Gwen (Eve Myles), Owen (Burn Gorman), Toshiko (Naoko Mori) and Ianto (Gareth Lloyd-Davies) all return as the investigators delving into the alien underworld of modern day Cardiff.
Roly Keating, Controller BBC Two, has also announced “due to popular demand from families and younger viewers, we will be showing a special pre-watershed repeat so everyone can enjoy the new series.”
Making a special guest appearance in the first episode is James Marsters as Captain John. He starred as Spike, the punk-goth vampire in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Captain John and Captain Jack go way back and have “history”.
When he appears through the Rift under Cardiff looking for Captain Jack not only does he disrupt Captain Jack’s homecoming but the whole team, city and world are suddenly placed in danger.
Series creator Russell T Davies says the new series “pushes the Torchwood team further than ever before. They are joined by some incredible guest stars who are really going to cause waves. It’s adventurous, thrilling and packed full of surprises.”
Guest stars include Richard Briers, Nerys Hughes and Alan Dale.
BBC Announce More Torchwood Casting
The producers of Torchwood yesterday announced that acclaimed actor Richard Briers is to appear in the second series as a reclusive millionaire who is the keeper of alien secrets.
The corporation also released this picture (right) of Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones on the set of The Hub - Torchwood’s underground base.
Series creator Russell T Davies promised that viewers would see a more grown up and worldly-wise Martha who brings her medical knowledge and the expertise learnt during her travels with The Doctor to help Torchwood do battle against an alien threat.
“Freema is a wonderful actress and we want to give her the chance to add another dimension to Martha. She is going to cause some waves in the team especially as she joins Torchwood at a point when everything is going to change for one of them” said Davies.
Agyeman described her three episode stint in Torchwood as “a great new challenge to be able to broaden and expand Martha as she develops in other directions for this more adult series. The Torchwood team are fabulous to work with and have made me very welcome.”
Martha has grown up a lot since Doctor Who. She’s now a fully qualified doctor and a bit hardened by life experiences. When she finds out that Captain Jack needs her help, she joins Torchwood for a while. She continues to develop her knowledge of alien intelligence, but this time keeping her feet on the ground.
“These will be invaluable skills to take back with her on future adventures with The Doctor. She outgrew The Doctor, in a sense, and so the next time they meet it will be in a more professional capacity. I’m so proud of her journey and who she has become.”
The second series of Torchwood begins on BBC Two in the New Year
