ITV’s Demons starts this Saturday

December 29, 2008 by Martin Hoscik · 10 Comments

Demons, ITV’s modern day take on the Dracula legend starts this Saturday (3rd January). The series stars Philip Glenister as Rupert Galvin, a larger-than-life American with a zero tolerance policy to the rabble of mythical “half-life” entities that exist all around us and Christian Cooke as Van Helsing’s descendant Luke, who is also Galvin’s the godson.

Luke discovers it’s his destiny to fight hordes of vampires, demons and zombies while trying to juggle an ordinary life of school exams, parties and learning to drive.

Helping Galvin to train Luke in his quest is the beautiful but icy cold Mina Harker (Zoe Tapper – Affinity, A Harlot’s Progress), a blind concert pianist with a history, who is also the foremost authority on the undesirable entities preying on humanity.

But before they have time to properly prepare Luke, he is faced with a daunting opponent in the form of the villainous Gladiolus Thrip (Mackenzie Crook -The Office, Pirates of the Caribbean) a sinister vampire with a burning hatred for the Van Helsing line and all they stand for.

Series producer Julian Murphy says he and and fellow producer Johnny Capp were attracted to the supernatural because “the script and storytelling process allow us to use our imaginations in ways that simply aren’t acceptable in your average cop show.”

“We focused on the Van Helsing legacy because it gives us a ready made mythology and experience has taught us that this is very important in dramas of this kind. But perhaps the most important inspiration was London itself and, more importantly, the secret world that lies beneath those very clean and modern streets.”

The six-part series is a Shine production for ITV1. Founded by Elisabeth Murdoch, Shine has produced shows such as Hex, Sugar Rush and Sinchronicity.

There will also be a tie-in game available at www.itv.com/demons – set in the dark streets of London, players control Luke with the aim of capturing half- lives which are taking over the capital. From his underground base, and with help from his friend Ruby and mystical expert Mina, players hunt down and capture the deadly creatures to secure a place on the leader board.

The trails for this have looked promising… can ITV finally make a decent drama?

I have a feeling that this could be a bit pants, but I’m willing to give it a go.

  3. Craig says:

Am looking forward to this – even if it’s complete pants at least its another British fantasy/Sci-fi show instead of yet another Trek import.

  4. Robert Beaver says:

Gosh, what an absolute disappointment. When Philip Glenister started talking in an American Accent I had doubts and when the tiny Demon appeared I thought the programme may have been made as a Comedy. I continued watching, after all the Programme appears on the front of The Radio Times…it must be Good? …It was not.

What was the point of the Bird-Like Nose on actor Mackensie Crook and I have been to some weird bars in my time and can assure you that if I had encountered someone who looked like Peter Tabern I would have pointed him out long before he regurgitated his ‘stomach contents’.

The programme (in my opinion) is not aimed at adults, not sure it is child worthy either. I enjoy a good ‘Fright’ but to be ‘Frightened’ the scene must be believable, it must have a story line that ‘could happen’ …and that Gun!!!

Oh dear, Bob Beaver of Northallerton says that Demons is not very entertaining, a resounding Flop.

  5. Martin P says:

His beak (I’m guessing) was the result of cosmetic surgery… ivory noses were used for such things, you could see his nose scarring underneath

  6. It was laughably bad, I’d wanted to like it but the dodgy American accent, the sub-par makeup and dreadful CGI beasties just made it impossible.

Makes FRIGHT NIGHT look like The Omen.

  7. Martin says:

I watched Mary Poppins yesterday, i think we’ve finally retaliated for that accent was awful why did no one take him to one side and ask him to drop it?

  8. Maggie says:

Who sings the theme tune for this

  9. Lee Bell says:

I have searched and can’t find who sings the theme tune to demons and wud be eternally grateful if when you find out can u e-mail me pls?
