The BBC is to employ hi-tech security measures to help buyers identify genuine Doctor Who merchandise following the huge success of the recent BBC One revival.
According to the Piranet website the corporation will apply holographic security labels to all Doctor Who merchandise to deter counterfeiting and to help consumers identify official products.
Rick McEwen, brand protection manager at the BBC, told Piranet “counterfeit Doctor Who merchandise would damage legitimate sales and tarnish the brand’s image”.
The BBC consider that the availabilty of any counterfeit products could also pose a risk to the safety of children as these items will not have been tested for compliance with UK and EU safety standards.
