This three-disc set contains all 6 episodes of the first series of Nebulous, a comedy sci-fi series which follows the adventures of Professor Nebulous (Mark Gatiss) and KENT – the Key Environmental Non-Judgemental Taskforce – dedicated to getting a post apocalyptic planet back on the right track.
I’d missed the radio broadcasts so I was uncertain what to expect from the series which I’d heard a lot of positive comments about.
The early moments of episode one have a number wry and gently amusing moments but I was initially left wondering where the really funny jokes and belly laughs were. I should have been more patient because when they did arrive, coinciding with the introduction of the character Harry, they were relentlessly funny.
The comedy works on several levels, Gatiss is in fine form as the deadly earnest Nebulous who delivers a series of wry and knowing lines
but the funniest (and silliest) character is Harry (Putner) who lacks a number of body parts as a result of the Professor’s failed experiment
to move the Isle of Wight – something he never misses an opportunity to remind Nebulous of.
Written by Graham Duff, who along with Paul Putner and Rosie Cavaliero co-stars in the series, the six episodes are of a consistently high standard with solid performances from the cast.
The episodes are directed by Nick Briggs (Doctor Who: Dalek Conquests) who also provides the lively incidental music. Nebulous comes to CD on February 5th courtesy of BBC Audiobooks and can be pre-ordered from BBC Shop.com.
