Graham Norton is to replace Sir Terry Wogan as the BBC’s commentator on the Eurovision Song Contest. Wogan has presented the show for 35 years and his commentary style is a major draw for many viewers
Following this year’s result which saw the UK’s entry finish last, the veteran TV and radio presenter said the event was “no longer a music contest”. His comments prompted speculation that his involvement with the annual event would end.
Earlier this year Eurovision bosses announced that the voting system would be overhauled to include both phone voters and national panels of judges.
Norton has previously presented the Eurovision Dance Contest and has produced a string of talent hunt shows for BBC One, including I’d Do Anything and How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?
In October the corporation announced that Andrew Lloyd Webber would compose the UK’s entry for 2009, with a performer selected in a nationwide talent hunt.
