Next month will see the release of an exclusive BBC Audiobooks production of Robert Rankin’s The Brightonomicon. The 7 hour-epic full-cast comedy drama, will be released as a 7 CD box-set and worldwide digital download.
Adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name the series follows the 12 outrageous, surreal, off-beat and hilarious adventures of Hugo ‘The Most Amazing Man Who Ever Lived’ Rune and his amnesiac assistant Rizla. Set in 1960’s Brighton, and featuring a host of unique and mad-cap characters, the series consists of 13 half-hour episodes, beautifully crafted in the tradition of series like ‘The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy‘.
The production was commissioned by BBC Audiobooks who describe the series as “a tour de force of UK acting and comedic talent…with a cast many Hollywood movies would die for!” and stars David Warner as Hugo Rune, Andy Serkis as Count Otto Black, Jason Isaacs as Tobes de Valois, Ben Miller as Captain Bartholomew Moulsecoomb, Mark Wing-Davey as Fangio and Martin Jarvis OBE as Colonel Mortimer .
The series is the brainchild of award-winning radio writer and producer Neil Gardner who said he’s been “dreaming of adapting one of Robert’s books for almost 20 years, and when the chance arose to have David Warner play Hugo Rune I knew I was finally in the right place at the right time with the right people. The past 2 years of production have been an incredible (if tiring) experience, and I know that this is just the first of many far-fetched adventures that will be adapted into full-cast format!”
And the producers of the series hope not just to amuse and entertain, but also to raise awareness of a serious issue:
“One of the main reasons for pushing ahead with making the series was the death of my best friend of a stroke back in 2003,” says Gardner. “Stroke is the 3rd biggest killer in the UK, and it affects people of ALL ages. We are dedicating the series to my friends memory, and encouraging everyone who hears the series to learn more about strokes…if we can save one life, help one family, we will have done a great thing!”
Adapted for audio by US comedy writer & producer Elliott Stein and Neil Gardner, and produced, edited and directed by Gardner, the series was Executive Produced by Stein, Rankin, David Warner & Rupert Degas and is a co-production of Hokus Bloke Productions (co-owned by Gardner, Stein, Warner, Rankin & Degas) and Ladbroke Radio (the oldest radio independent production company in the UK). It was commissioned by BBC Audiobooks, who are also publishing and distributing the series.
