The decision by the BBC Trust to freeze the lavish salaries of Director-General Mark Thompson and the 640 other senior managers of the BBC is a belated sign of sanity at the bloated broadcaster as it news that around 140 top posts are to go.
Whether at time of recession or national boom, it defies belief that the Licence Fees of more than half a million homes are currently being syphoned off to pay the salaries of a group of people who in recent years have presided over an organisation which has duped competition entrants, been criticised by OFCOM for unacceptable levels of violence and embroiled a fairly simple Saturday night dance contents in rows over bullying, agism and racism.
Many Licence Fee payers will be wondering what these 640 senior managers do all day for their mega-salaries.
Suddenly it seems that, despite past protests that it always strives to provide value for money to Licence Fee payers, the corporation can be run by fewer people who are employed on lower salaries.
As welcome as today’s news is, someone needs to explain why, if the corporation can do without 140 of the current managers, those posts were ever created.
