So I’m late getting the news but I’ve just found out (two years after the news broke) that Free Radical, makers of the astoundingly good Timesplitters Series and the astoundingly bad Haze PS3 exclusive are rumored to be making the next installment in the Star Wars: Battlefront Series. I say rumored as no official confirmation has been made so far and Free Radicals own website only indicates that they are working on a “secret LucasArts Project”
Two months ago would have been great news, however after the disappointment that was Haze I can’t help feeling a little bit under-whelmed by the news. Battlefront was always a good play on the PS3 and Xbox, the kind of game anyone could jump right into and master in a matter of rounds. Single player modes were similarly accessible partly due to the fact that you play as a pawn rather than a knight, meaning that dying would incur the “game over” screen instead you spawn as another pawn and the gameplay rolls on. A simple concept seen in other titles (Battlefield Series) but one that quickly gets you submersed in the gameplay. Of course there are greater things in life to worry about that video games but I have to admit to being very fond of the Battlefront games, for some time on the seenit forums we had lengthy discussions of the games merits…
Battlefront on a next-gen console could be an astounding feat of gaming… but then wasn’t Haze supposed to be the next best thing? Haze promised so much and delivered so very little, awful scripts, acting, bland graphics, flawed AI and a concept that just didn’t “gel” seemed so much more disappointing given the house that produced it. Let’s hope Free Radical have recovered from the “Haze Effect” and are well on their way to making a success of the “LucasArt Project”
Oh, and fingers double crossed for the next Timesplitters project too!
