An insult to the legacy July 21, 2010 Bruce J. Mclaren (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
How this can be considered part of the Hitchhikers' trilogy beggars belief. It amazes me that they allowed it to be released. I can't remember being so uninterested in a book as I read it. It was a real struggle to continue but I thought it could only get better. It didn't.
Thanks - keep the fish! July 20, 2010 Mr. Chris Hinchley (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bloody dirge-like and awful! Saying that I stopped after 40 pages so maybe it does improve. I was 17 when HHGTTG came out so of course it was the best thing since sliced Vogons. And 'Restaurant..' was that rare hit when the sequel surpassed the original (much like ST: TWOK).
But lets face it - Adam's 3 -5 of the 'trilogy' became so mind-bendingly dull, and I only bought them because I was hoping he could re-render what he first delivered.
Maybe 31 yrs later (for me) is too long to actually care about Colfer's resurrection - and as a genre fan it's the first book in a long time I've put down barely a 10th in with no desire to pick it up again.

What a shame. Colfer has written some good stuff, but this is just not in his league, let alone Douglas Adams'. It is rare for me not to finish a book, no matter how bad. I have given up with this.
Very disappointing pastiche May 21, 2010 Duana (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wasn't expecting this book to be up to Douglas Adams' standard, he's so utterly unique that I don't think anyone could match him in his own genre. But I did expect it to be readable. It isn't. I've had three goes at it and only made it to page 73. Eoin Colfer is obviously a big fan and has tried very hard, but maybe too hard. It feels strained, and the constant use of Hitchhiker's references and language is desperate and jarring. I only wonder that Mr Colfer did not realize his attempt to emulate his hero had failed so miserably and give up. Maybe the money was too good?
If you are a Hitchhiker's fan, read the original books over again, listen to the radio series, watch the tv series, just don't waste your money on this book!
Much better than I expected April 2, 2010 Ulf Elofson 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Anyone expecting a carbon-copy of Douglas Adams will be disappointed. This is a book standing on its own feet. I was very critical when I started listening to this audio book. I was expecting the words of Douglas Adams but as I listened I realized that the book had a quality of its own. It's different, but in a very good way and very inventive. After the first culture chock, accepting that it wasn't Douglas Adams, I really appreciated it.
