1 out of 5 stars Arrived too late   February 14, 2010

Product did not arrive in time for Christmas as stated - was left in the Irvine Depot of the Courrier for a week. On the positive side, Amazon had refunded my payment before it ever left the depot to go back to them - thanks for that!

5 out of 5 stars I didn't get where I am today by not recognising a classic when I see it   August 29, 2009
F. Lane (London UK)
I grabbed this special edition as soon as I saw it - I have fond memories of the series when they were aired, and I still have all the books.

Leonard Rossiter is outstanding as the beleaguered Reggie: this has to be his best ever performance, and the one he should be remembered for. The strong supporting cast are a joy, but Leonard shines overall.

The Legacy of Reginald Perrin is worth a look, though I doubt I'd have bought it on its own - a Reggie Perrin series with no Reggie Perrin? It's a tad remeniscent [to me, anyway] of "Laughter in Paradise", and I expected the same sting in the tail - I'm not going to say if that happened or not, watch it yourself!

The bonus disc has the "Comedy Connection" of The Fall and Rise, and a very short Christmas special. I could have wished for more on Leonard - or, basically, anything on Leonard! - but there was no biography, which is a shame.

Nevertheless, if you remember Reggie, or if you don't but wonder why someone says "Super!" whenever someone else says "Great!" then you should buy this and find out.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW OF THE FALL AND RISE OF REGINALD PERRIN DVD   August 27, 2009
Mr. B. P. Rutter
RECIEVED MY DVD BOXSET YESTERDAY THE 26TH AUGUST 2009 GREAT DVDS VERY FUNNY PROGRAMME
I WAS BORN IN 1976 THE YEAR THE FIRST SERIES WAS MADE WHICH IS NOW 33 YEARS OLD
LENNARD ROSSITER WAS A GREAT COMIC ACTOR OF THE 1970S/80S AND HAS A CAREER THAT SPANS NEARLY 40 YEARS OTHER PROGRAMES INCLUDING RISING DAMP
HIS DEATH IN OCTOBER 1984 OF HEART FAILURE WAS A MAJOR SHOCK TO BRITISH COMEDY THE OTHER BEING ERIC MORECOMBE

THE CATCHPHRASES ARE VERY WELL WRITTEN AND THE CHARACTERS ARE VERY FUNNY OR SUPER/GREAT OR I DIDNT GET WHERE I AM TODAY
I WOULD HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS DVD BOXSET AS IT TAKES A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE AND TO WATCH THE SUPERB ACTING OF THE LATE LENNARD ROSSITER

5 out of 5 stars E.ARMSTRONG ,DORSET   August 27, 2009

Great dvd just as you would expect alot of laughs and a lot of inoffensive humour. A great gift for anyone who was a product of the 70`s and 80`s. Shame they don`t make comedy like this anymore i think it`s all become too politically correct. Buy this dvd and you won`t regret it, it is of times gone by.

5 out of 5 stars Leonard Rossiter, you are sadly missed.   August 20, 2009

British TV is in a bit of a rut these days. "Reality" programs are made in preference of drama, because they are cheaper to produce. Reality comedy is made in preference to sitcoms and comedy drama, for much the same reason. Don't get my wrong. I love QI, I just don't think we need 101 QI clones which have the same pool of talent (surely Jo Brand must be in the Guinness Book of Records for being on the most panel games). The only thing that seems to change is the backdrop and theme tune, and then only slightly. The jokes even seem to linger from show to show, or perhaps thats just David Mitchell.

So what a breath of fresh air this box set is! A trip down memory lane which is as funny now as it was when it was first screened. Actually, it is funnier. Having had a chance to experience in life an awful lot of what the program was railing against, these shows, well the first couple of series anyway, pack even more punch. All the absurdities of corporate life and the crushing of the individual's spirit are held up for ridicule here. The script itself is good, but not brilliant. CJ's catchphrase will ALWAYS make me laugh, but funniest by far is the late, great Leonard Rossiter. He shone in this series, much more so than in the role he had in Rising Damp. Here he is the star, and he pulls it off magnificantly. He is an Everyman hero that I'm sure anybody who has ever worked in an office can admire and relate to. His interview on "Pillock Talk" is one of the funniest things I have seen on TV, and CJ's annonymous suggestion in the third series is subtle humour at its best.

But it isn't all laughter. There are moments here that are very poingent. Not many comedy series would finish an episode with the lead in tears. When one of the major stations had a series on Madness (as a state of mind, not a Ska band) they actually featured the episode as an example. Thinking about it, it might have been Breakdowns, but you get the idea.

The Legacy of Reginald Perrin is an oxymoron, but thankfully it is only classed as an extra anyway, so no worries there.

At under £20 this is an absolute steal. Buy it and spend a weekend wallowing in nostalgia and railing against the ever present machine.
