Callan Third Series June 25, 2010 M. Colbert (Australia) t is good to see that series such as Callan are finally making it to dvd. Not only are the older viewers able to see favourite programmes, but younger generations can view quality acting, writing and production values. These combined show how effective a strong story can be regardless of there being the latest in SFX. The two series (three and four) are currently available for viewers in Australia, the other series are still set for zone two - my only issue. Hopefully to be addressed sometime in the near future. The programme is engaging to people from the USSR as well.
series three is really series one. March 22, 2010 Mr. James Gilmer I can't fault the Callan series which is why I bought series three. Trouble is series three is realy series one and follows on from the monochrome series. It picks up where the monochrome series left off with Callan shooting and killing Hunter. The first episode in the series one and three have Callan coming out of hospital five months after shooting Hunter and in turn being shot by Meres. Excellent but I do not want two copies of series one. Callan - Third Series [DVD]
Classy Callan October 21, 2009 P. Millist (Walton on the Naze UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Absolute CLASSIC! A series that is made by both the characters and the story lines. Reality-type suspense that actually is believable, and acting that is superb. You feel like you are part of it - that the whole thing is going on in your living room. Edward Woodward was made for the part of Callan. Great stuff!

Previous reviewers are correct:
1. This IS the third series that appeared on TV, but
2. On the original boxed set is is clearly described as series 1.
Reason:
It appears that virtually no KNOWN copies exist of any episodes from the first two televised series. So I guess there's little chance we'll ever get to see them now.
Which is unfortunate since they were IMO a lot more raw and gutsy than the later series, possibly helped by the fact that they were in black and white rather than in colour.
FWIW, Callan's original name was "John Craig" - a sort of poor man's James Bond and a close relation of Len Deighton's "Harry Palmer" in "The Ipcress File" which had come out a year or two earlier. James Mitchell, using the name James Munro, created the Craig character in a series of four (?) books, which also featured "Lonely". In the Craig stories Lonely was a "ton-up boy" (a biker), though he smelled awful even then. "Mind Bender" Snell was also in the books, though under a different name, if I remember correctly. And Mitchell occasionally recycled whole incidents. The storyline about the gun dealer in "Callan - the Movie", for example, was originally in one of the Craig books.
Callan was in turn a poor man's version of John Craig, though much of Craig's basic character carried over from the books into the TV episodes. Ronald Radd as Hunter was IMO the perfect realization of Craig's boss in the books.
Callan Series 1,2,3,4 September 26, 2008 Peter J. Baxter (Canberra Australia) Most Callan devotess acknowledge this programme to be the most gripping yet difficult to obtain the real Series 1 and the film The Wet Job. I have them - the first four episodes in poor condition - but sound track excellent and the quality improves after that. These are on dvd and I have copies of the four disc set available in Canberra Australia - written application to Peter Baxter 20 The Pines Ave. Sundown Village, Narrabundah ACT 2604. Australia.
