Amazon.co.uk Review Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

Extremely disappointing June 25, 2009 Dr T I really wanted to enjoy this film but gosh it's very disappointing. Without spoiling the reveal, in my opinion this is a terrible thing to force into an Indy film. Besides this Lucas-induced lunacy, what else is there? I like the actors but the problems are their forgettable performances, the bizarre CGI (thanks Lucas!), poor script, overuse of lifeless (and obvious) sets, no energy to the narrative... I could go on but needless to say: not recommended. From my point of view the only thing this film has contributed would be some of the most hilarious reviews ever written (e.g. some of the sad reactions on IMDB). That's about it!
Time to pension off Dr Jones June 21, 2009 birchden (Eastbourne, East Sussex United Kingdom) It looks like the Indiana Jones story has finally reached the end of the road with this rather tired adventure, mainly involving chasing around the "South American" jungle.
There is an interesting start, involving a near miss on a nuclear test range, with some nicely observed period touches, but once the film gets going the plot seems to struggle, with the frequent fights and chases proving to be no substitute for an involving plot.
And don't get too excited about the bonus disk. The content is far too lightweight to be of much interest.
After this latest outing for Dr Jones, it is very hard to see how this series can go on. On balance, it would have been much better if it had all ended on the comparatively high note of "The Last Crusade".
Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull June 10, 2009 Busy Bee (U.K.)
A thoroughly enjoyable yarn, fast moving and the special fx are awesome. The pace never slows.
I Love Indy!! June 7, 2009 S. Gilby (Newry, N. Ireland) The Ould Bys Still Got It!
As a child i loved the Indianna Jones and once i heard the magic was going to be rekindled after all these years i HAD to have it! Of course i had my worries that it would be horrible and destroy it totally, but i loved it =D Really fantabulous and fun! Perfect Night In Stuff!!
Lucas and Spielberg continue to strip mine our childhoods May 20, 2009 Mr. Pa Smith (A kennel in York) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
After the Star Wars early years debacle I shouldn't have expected much from this movie, but I did. Foolish me.
The key phrase when reviewing this film is "Not Enough". The script is reasonably good, but not enough. Production values and effects are the only thing up to par. The acting isn't bad and so on, but the magic is gone. It's comparable to Raiders and Crusade, but only in terms of "not as good as".
Re-watch the first and third movies, leave this one on the shelf.
