Amazon.co.uk Review
Broadcast under intense speculation as to whether it would lead to David Morrissey taking over the title role, Doctor Who: The Next Doctor actually turned out to be a really enjoyable Christmas special for the show, crammed with action, ideas and solid family entertainment.

The premise of The Next Doctor, that there are two Doctors on the go, is set up early, as Tennant’s Doctor encounters Morrissey’s character wielding a screwdriver, talking of the TARDIS and fighting foes. This allows Tennant to slip into the role of the assistant, and his double act with Morrissey is excellent, with the latter making the most of a meaty, evolving role.

Also winning the acting plaudits though is the baddie of the piece, played by Dervla Kirwan. She’s scene-stealingly good here, and is the most sinister foe on offer in The Next Doctor. Next to her, the returning cybermen looking surprisingly tame, even when considering the surprises that the episodes throws up as it enters its final act.

The Next Doctor isn’t a perfect episode by any means, and the terrific Christmas Invasion is surely the best Yuletide instalment to date. But it’s an entertaining, busy and ambitious hour, and worth seeing for Morrissey and Kirwan alone. Rollicking good stuff, even if the cybermen seem to quickly need another reboot… –-Jon Foster

Not only a great Dr Who adventure for Christmas 2008 featuring the cybermen, but also includes the fantastic Dr Who concert recorded at the Albert Hall.

1 out of 5 stars They Think It's All Over   August 3, 2009

I want to get one thing straight before I begin this review.
I am well aware that throughout Doctor Who history, there have always been, how should I say this, lesser stories.
Twin Dilemma for example is appalling, as is Time and The Rani etc etc etc.
The new series is not an exception to this rule. We only need to look back a series or two to the 'Absorbaloth'...and the ground breakingly pitiful 'Adipose' from Series 4.
I would also like to point out that I am aware the Christmas Specials have always been more fun and less plot and tension driven that the usual episodes.
But how anyone can call this a good story is beyond me. These are my reasons:

-Doctor Who has always been fantastic when it comes to the Cybermen, especially the new series. They are one of the few villains which to this day have always been just as scary and never had a bad story. Even the Daleks had one or two lesser stories. But this is officially the first Cybermen story to make the villians feel about as scary as...well...the Adipose!
-As a classic fan, I find the invention of a what resembles a large ungroomed dog with a cyberman mask on, frankly insulting. Once more they don't even try and explain the reason for these.
-The idea of introducing the next Doctor before the regeneration was fantastic, and to be honest, I though David Morrisey would have made an incredible doctor. So when it turned out to be yet another vague story line about why he thought he was the doctor...I was incredibly disappointed.
-The giant cyberman which David Tennant fights in a hot air balloon is ridiculous. The BBC seem to think they have perfected the art of CGI which frankly, they havn't. This is a fine example of being far too ambitious.
-Russel T Davies has a natural gift for character development and building up suspense. Unfortunately it always feels like he is better at building up suspense rather than the aftermath of the build up. IN other words, this is yet another story where Tennant spends a large amount of time getting excited and fretting over the Cybermen, only to SUDDENLY work out a completely random and out of the blue idea for stopping the enemy, which is far too complicated for any of us to understand. Simply put, it feels like Davies uses the Doctor's intelligence to confuse us and avoid thinking up a clever conclusion.

I forgave the other Christmas Specials, because they were blatant family fun adventures and nothing more. But you cannot introduce a timeless enemy into one of these episodes and shatter all the infamy and fear that so many writers have spent years creating. Once more you can't spend an entire episode persuading your audience to fall in love with a character and accept him onto there screens for the next few years, only to reveal it was all a big misunderstanding.

Despite that said, this episode is most defiantly worth a watch, but only to admire Morrisey's performance. It's only other use is to sit back and laugh at how ridiculous at times this show can be, and that almost 50 years down the line, they still haven't figured that out yet.
