Amazon.co.uk Review Based on the best-selling book by Martina Cole, The Take follows the story of Freddie Jackson, a man who’s just left prison. And it’s fair to say has no intention of leaving a life of crime behind him. Thanks to the book of contacts he’s accrued while inside, he’s looking to put his newly found knowledge to commercial, and criminal, use. Played by Tom Hardy, in a strong leading turn, Jackson doesn’t take long to get back to business. The Take lands him a London rife with gang warfare though, and we soon get the impression that this is not a safe place to be. Events start in the mid 1980s, and the narrative of the drama then covers the next decade, and the cultural and political changes that encompasses. And Jackson’s life doesn’t quite go the way he’d envisaged⦠Co-starring Brian Cox and Charlotte Riley, The Take packs plenty in over its four instalments, and it doesn’t hold back on portraying just how brutal the London underworld can be. Yet it’s gripping drama, nonetheless, spearheaded by a superb turn from Tom Hardy in the lead role. Granted, it crams too much into four episodes, and often has to gallop through events. Plus, there’s a familiarity to the narrative. But this is a gritty, well-released adaptation of a strong book, and worth seeking out. --Jon Foster

tom February 1, 2010 Mrs. P. Lowe (england) WHAT can i say, the man is back, the emotions i went through watching this, one moment you hated him, the next you felt sorry for him, and the end was to die for, what more can i say.Just brilliant.
The Take DVD January 24, 2010 Helen L. Bruce (Brisbane, Australia) I ordered this DVD from Amazon U.K as Channel 7 in Australia started to play "The Take", then proceeded to take it off the air as it was deemed too violent.
My husband and I had just been getting into it and thought it was brilliant, when it was taken off air.
We absolutely loved the DVD and couldn't stop watching it. The character played by Tom Hardy was amazing. I would recommend this DVD to anyone and have done so here in Oz. I haven't read the book, but am now going to.
Fantastic mini series, so glad that I found it on Amazon!!!!!

True Review December 14, 2009 S A Glover (UK) Much like the book this was adapted from - this is overlong, heavy and not as good as its cover reviews. Hardy is a presence and a very fine actor, but his glaring and slow whispered delivery does soon grate in this adaptation. The acting is generally good to be fair, but the script is over wrought in some places and underdone in others.
This had a lot of money spent on it, but sadly you can't really see where?
Not sure why people would give this 4 or 5 as it is nothing more than alright. Not bad, not great. Its alright...
