Amazon.co.uk Review Even those who previously were alien to the charms of Torchwood, the âadult’ Doctor Who spin off, were left applauding by the end of 2009’s five-episode serial, Torchwood: Children Of Earth. For this was âadult’ in a good sense: no cheap swearing, no sex and violence for the sake of it. Rather, a challenging, thumping good tale for grown-ups, superbly told. Its story, as so many Torchwood stories do, has alien intruders at its heart. Far more creepily, though, there’s the small matter of all the children on the planet being controlled at once. It’s thrillingly realised, and genuinely gets under your skin. The drama is further complicated by the dishevelled state that Torchwood itself is in when we find it, as it’s once more tasked with saving the world from disaster. Rarely has it been so ill-prepared for such a major threat. To tell you more about the plot of Torchwood: Children Of Earth would be to spoil it. It’s a dish very much best served cold, and an outstanding piece of science fiction television. It also looks its best in high definition, courtesy of a quality Blu-ray release. We’re not talking Hollywood blockbuster feature film standards, but it’s not too far behind. And it’s as good a looking a piece of British sci-fi as you can find on Blu-ray to date. Simply: an outstanding serial, and a very good disc. --Jon Foster

Stunning example of sci-fi drama at its best February 22, 2010 Mr. Stuart Bruce (Cardiff, UK) 2009 was when Torchwood changed- from being a self-indulgent cult spin-off version of Doctor Who for adults, into being a powerful drama in its own right. The way the drama plays out day-by-day over the five episodes is a brilliant piece of writing- absolutely the best TV show of 2009.
The Blu-ray is worth having, if you can watch it. As I write this it barely costs any more than the DVD, but the picture quality is absolutely stunning. The aerial shots of Cardiff and London in particular help convince you you're watching a high-budget feature film, not a TV series.
Once you've watched it three or four times, a few plotholes and slight inconsistencies start showing through, but let's overlook that as this is a pretty much flawless drama. If I could give it 6 out of 5, I would.
Children of Earth February 15, 2010 J. L. Kinory (Oxford, U.K.) Lots of twists and turns in the plot that you don't expect, so you're kept on the edge of your chair for the whole series of episodes.
Goodbye jack February 12, 2010 Mr. Stephen Skuce I wonder if they will return with a new series but I feel this concluded torchwood
WHY BOTHER? January 30, 2010 Mr. Francis P. Mcquade (Kogarah NSW Australia) I have often wondered why we earthlings feel so threatened by aliens. Is it because we know in our hearts that the most virulent disease is the one we produce ourselves: WAR. First we had Independence Day, "V" and now Torchwood. Did it ever occur to us that we pose the greatest threat to this planet.
If someone wanted to produce a first rate Sci-Fi thriller, series or movie which could be quite believable, why not choose Arthur C Clarke's "Childhood's End"? A great novel written about the final answer to Life, The Universe and Everything.
We are the most self-centered species on this planet, filling it with billions of offspring with such ease, that it would put a male rabbit to shame. In another movie I recall, "Soylent Green" our habit of procreation becomes our undoing. Don't get me wrong, Torchwood is not bad and I watched it with considerable unease, which is what a good thriller is about.
It is brilliant! January 23, 2010 Christina Dettmann (Berlin) A full series in only 5 episodes. And they were great!
I hope to see more of Gwen und the Captain!
