Beautiful but very sad September 2, 2009 P. Metcalfe 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I owned this as a 15 year old generation x-er who was obssessed with Nirvana and watched it all the time completely unaware of what it actually depicts.
If you were a fan back in the day then get this: it is the last time a genuine musical act made it big and when long hair and being trashy wasn't some pre packaged emo crap that every one in or insert the name of any pseudo-relevant student town was wearing. The best bits are the bits that would never be allowed today - Territorial Pissings instead of Lithium on The Jonathan Ross show, mimed Teen Spirit on TOTP. These are the acts of a band who, despite of course actually wanting to be successful, were trying to genuinely make a point as to the percieved plasticity of the ever evil 'industry'.
The thing about this though is that you totally understand what happened to KC, as a kid I wasn't deep enough but it shows someone who has strong beliefs and a clear ethic being ruined by success. Its clihe I know but it's true. They look so lost at those massive arena shows when they are clearly much more suited to smaller venues.
In summary, this was a great visit back to my days of learning their entire back catalogue on guitar and giving pretend concerts in my bedroom but mostly served as a big slap in the face. Never again will genuinely passionate guitar music be so hugely in the media spotlight. It is sad that we are stuck now with bands like Oasis, Kings of whatever, Razorblah, the Killers or whatever nonsense is purged annually into the embarrasingly overblown 'alternative' scene.
It is a great watch and essential to anyone who ever was into them.
Absolutely Brilliant! July 11, 2008 pinkfairyice (London, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This DVD is a definite MUST for any nirvana fan, or someone wanting to get into their music. It has some brilliant shows/gigs of some of their best songs. Trust me, you won't be bored! It really makes you feel part of the scene, like you are at the concerts. A great DVD to watch with some mates, or to rave by yourself to.... ;)
It contains (a few entertaining might a say) interviews and some footage that the band had shot themselves on a home movie camera.
Yes, I would say that Cobain is probably drunk (or worse) in a few of the performances, but it makes it more entertaining!
Good DVD but perhaps not better than MTV Unplugged May 1, 2008 Sebastijan Toncinic (Lovran, Croatia) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Live shows have always used to impress a lot of people. This DVD is significant! All that matters about Nirvana is here. At least to me. As I just wanted to say don't hesitate to buy this DVD edition even case you love In Utero and the following Nirvana albums more than I do. This is almost a complete Nirvana edition with the songs that can be found on Nevermind and/or the albums that have preceeded Nevermind and the footage which are all right from the Nirvana 1991-92 Nevermind tour. It is just so simply great DVD! There are lots of extras and the interviews with the band members sharing their music devoted opinion about the world and the music in general back those years. The complete track list and the extras also can be seen on Amazon web page so I wouldn't name all these right here. Kurt had plans of his own about the Live!Tonight!Sold Out and those came real. The quality is superb! Buy this one together with the MTV Unplugged edition. You will all love at least one of these!
A long time waiting but worth it!!! January 9, 2007 P. Goodman (Preston, Lancashire, UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this on video when it first came out, and since the DVD revolution have hoped it would be realeased on those flashy discs. It hasn't disappointed and the magic is still there. Also it is nice to see some additional material included too.
For those who haven't watched this, it is an essential dvd to own for any grunger. If you are a Nirvana fan buy it!! There isn't much video material available of Nirvana so this is a must buy. Let's hope they bring out an official recording of the unplugged gig too!
close to perfection December 2, 2006 Mrs. Alison M. Percival (Guildford , England) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Finally a nirvana live dvd which sums up the pure awesomeness of nirvanas live shows. The picture and sound quality are top notch with a few exeptions. The interviews are excellent and give a good view of the bands perspective on life and the music industry. Best nivana dvd to date but i was slightly dissapointed with the amount of bonus footage.
