| Customer Reviews: Brilliant album from an amazing band. August 19, 2009 metal maestro It's no secret that 1997's One Second divided opinion among Paradise Lost Fans. The band faced accusations of selling out, when in truth they had produced a very impressive, albeit different record.
With Symbol of Life, Nick Holmes and co have managed to fuse the increased use of keyboard harmonies found on One Second with the agressive, catchy riffing of their classic mid-period albums to produce a truly stunning record. Tracks like Erased and the amazing Two Worlds prove the band are still among the finest in the gothic metal genre they helped spawn more than two decades ago.
Paradise Lost have never achieved the success that their originality and undeniable talent have deserved yet it's not hard to see why bands like Nightwish and Cradle of Filth rate them as such a huge influence. Mixing the best elements of new and old, Symbol of life sits proudly alongside PL's classic releases and can more than hold it's own against records by todays youngbloods.
A band that continues to evolve April 3, 2004 WJ Davidson (Edinburgh) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Paradise Lost have changed their style with every album since Icon. Sometimes it works well, sometimes less so.Symbol of Life sees them moving into more Euro/Goth territory (the Rammstein comment in the other review is quite apt) and contains some cracking songs (Isolate and Erased are obvious crowd pleasers) but Symbol of Life, Perfect Mask and Mystify are also pretty good and the version of Small Town Boy (on the special enhanced version of this CD) is inspired. My only criticism (of this album and it is also true of their others) is that while they choose such distinctly different styles for each album, the individual tracks can sound a bit samey to the casual listener.
Paradise back on track. November 18, 2003 Bloodline22 After the electronic experiments from One second and Host, the commercial metal scene turned their back on PL for good... And after the total fiasco "Believe in Nothing" nobody even cared.What?...Who's Paradise lost ? Even tho that Host and Believe in nothing contained one of the best songwriting in PL's history ever, they were totally ignored. But now PL is back with an ace album!Symbol of life is harder, more agressive and with power, and also more raw (thankx to the good production of Rhys Fulber)than the previous Host and Believe in nothing.Symbol of life is the perfect mix between Draconian times and Host.Tracks like "Self obsessed" and "Primal" could also stand on One second. Stand out tracks are "Pray nightfall","Symbol of life" and "No celebration". Other good tracks are "Isolate","Self obsessed" and "Erased". Buy this if you liked Draconian times and One second, because PL are back on track.

Paradise losts new album "symbol of life" is another excelent peice of work, with more in common with "one second" than the early "gothic" or more recently "host" the album is a blend of heavy guitar riffs and eletronic symphonies created by the multi tallented Greg Mackintosh, Nick Holmes Vocals are as angstfilled as ever before, his ability to sing so well cleanly has far outdone the growling found on "lost paradise" and "gothic". Truely a good peice of work by the best techno goth band in the feild. Highlights include the single "erased", "symbol of life", "Isolate" and "pray nightfall" For fans who where looking for something a little darker (and better produced) album after "beleive in nothing"
