Disappointing September 9, 2010 W. J. Perring I've seldom enjoyed the ending of a film more - and boy was I looking forward to it ending - so the idea of an extended version fills me with dread.
Ridley Scott has made some excellent films, but this really isn't one of them. As for Russell Crowe, I'm not sure what he was going for - presumably some kind of taciturn northerner, but if so he completely misses it, and simply looks bored with the whole thing - a feeling I can well understand.
Such a shame, because the look of the film isn't bad, and a really gritty, warts and all version of the Robin Hood story would have been a pleasant change - but it seems that film-makers just can't resist adding those pantomime moments.

Just a reply to a couple of points raised by others.
Firstly, as far as we know, Robin Hood is a conflation of various other 'rebels'and now unknown story-tellers favourites or a purely mythical creation.
There would have been already well-known stories of adventure and derring-do re-ascribed to 'Robin Hood' as the action hero 'flavour of the medieval day'.
Therefore, adding another layer to the mythos is not a crime, it's more a continuation of the historical process - the myth of Robin Hood did not spring into being fully formed and finished, after all...
Secondly, Prince John DOES NOT SIGN anything like the Magna Carta in the movie - it actually gets destroyed!
Any complaints about the dates for the signing of the Magna Carta being out by years are therefore irrelevant, as are complaints about Robin Hood's dad writing it.
Obviously, it was just a template, later revived and improved by the English Barons : ) (Joke!)
And thirdly, as for Eleanor of Aquitaine not seeing herself as English, well, she WAS Queen consort of England from 1154-1189, 35 years, her husband being Henry, Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy, later to become Henry 2nd OF ENGLAND.
At this point, the relationship between England and France was far more indistinct than in the modern day; great swathes of France were tied to England by marriage and conquest. If you were the monarch of a country, you would see yourself as a 'defender' of that nation, be it where you were born or not; it would be your royal duty.
Finally, the wandering accents - unless Ridley Scott did a Mel Gibson and made the whole film in Medieval Anglo Saxon English, Norman French and Medieval Latin, no accent is going to be 'authentic' - we're not even sure what the accents they had back then sounded like!
So, maybe just lighten up and enjoy this movie for the entertainment it is, i.e. not an historical documentary - although, btw, it's the only film I've ever seen that shows the correct way to take off a mail shirt (I'm a reenactor, so 'been there, done that'!)

No character development, no decent plots, just a boring movie. I fell asleep twice during fight scenes. This movie had good actors, but a really boring script and plot....
Robin Hood - Extended Director's Cut Limited September 5, 2010 S. D. N. Hole (UK) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I new nothing about this film before I saw it, so had no pre-conceived ideas.
But this is just not "Robin Hood".If it had been called something else my review may well have been a little different. But at the end of the day this story makes no sense at all. Most people are aware of the "Robin Hood" adventure, and this just is not that story. Someone has just decided to forget all we know, and start again. Even down to when "Richard the Lion Heart" dies. I will not spoil the film by giving you the plot, but if you are a purist give this film a miss. "Russell Crow" sounds like a northerner, who can't get is accent right, because no-won in Nottingham sounds like this. The film is way to long in it's Cinema size, so to have an extended cut is just not on. In my op-ion this is "Russell Crows" worst film, and I for one will not be buying it.
UK customers miss out again September 3, 2010 Mr. J. A. Wells 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
not a film review but more to point out the US are getting a blu-ray/dvd/digital copy of the film were as us UK customers will have to buy one or the other with no DC copy to be seen. even though the US version is multi region it would be pointless as you can not download the DC without a US itunes account. shame really the UK dips out again
