Remember all those desperate pleas from ineffectual BBC management types that neither they nor the corporation as a whole had an agenda to keep older women off our screens?
Well the decision to pass on a revival of Birds Of A Feather hardly helps their case.
And as with the decision to ask Yes, Prime Minister creators Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn to submit a pilot of that show’s revival, the passing on a new run of Birds entitles us to question the suitability of BBC bosses for their jobs.
Is their always-visible desire to appear ‘modern’ and ‘relevant’ leading them to turn their noses up to proven successes? Or are they just completely out of touch with what good comedy is all about?
Either way, passing on a full series of a fondly remembered show, one which would allow them to disprove one of the most persistent criticisms of the BBC, rates as a massive own-goal.
