Richard Hammond’s had a weekend of mockery after The Grand Tour presenter said he didn’t eat ice cream because he’s straight.
The quip, made in the show’s latest episode, was greeted with laughter and applause from the Finnish audience in the tent, bafflement from many of those who weren’t and claims of homophobia from others – some of who even watched the episode and definitely didn’t only get cross when they saw an internet meme about it.
It’s now been suggested that the line was a reference to this 2010 Finnish ice cream advert in which a guy manages to woo a seemingly straight lad simply by giving him an ice cream:
Could that be the explanation for the otherwise odd and meaningless comment?
The Grand Tour does do localised gags – the President Zuma one in episode two went down very well with the South African audience – so it’s possible.
But if that is the case, isn’t 2010 a rather a long time ago to be mining for gags? And surely the team would’ve known the reference would make no sense for the wider audience and that controversy would follow?
But maybe they didn’t care and have been happy with the resulting publicity – after all, much of their appeal is based on being a bit naughty and the fuss over this gag has helpfully told millions that they’re still up to their old tricks just as their two-part road trip special gets ready to launch this weekend.
The Grand Tour is available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video – including in 4K – for anyone with an Amazon Prime subscription or standalone monthly subscription to the Prime Video service.
