Gary Oldman plays retired Spymaster George Smiley, a legendary figure at ‘the Circus’, one of the UK’s secret services defending the realm during the hight of the cold war.
When a disgraced agent reappears with information concerning a mole at the very heart of the Circus, Smiley is drawn back into the murky field of espionage.
Tasked with investigating which of his trusted former colleagues has chosen to betray him and their country, Smiley narrows his search to four suspects.
All are experienced, urbane, successful agents but past histories, rivalries and friendships make it far from easy to pinpoint the man who is eating away at the heart of the British establishment.
Directed by Tomas Alfredson, the film has been adapted from then classic John le Carré novel of the same name by by Peter Straughan and Bridget O’Connor and was shot in London, Budapest and Istanbul.
The film also stars Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Ciarán Hinds, John Hurt, Toby Jones, Konstantin Khabensky, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Roger Lloyd Pack and Mark Strong.
le Carré has recently praised the film and Oldman’s performance as Smiley, a role made famous by Sir Alec Guinness in a BBC One adaptation.
Talking about comparisons between the actors the author, real name David Cornwell), says:
“If people write to me and say, ‘How could you let this happen to poor Alec Guinness,’ I shall reply that, if ‘poor Alec’ had witnessed Oldman’s performance, he would have been the first to give it a standing ovation.”
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is released on September 16th.
