War finally arrived as the second series of Upstairs Downstairs drew to close with Johnny (Nico Mirallegro) heading to the front while Sir Hallam gets a safer berth at the Palace.
After far too long a wait it’s been good to see the show return and I’ve enjoyed this longer run, though not as much as I did the original three episodes.
Part of the reason is the absence of Jean Marsh’s Rose, her two short appearances simply remind us how much she’s missed. Upstairs Downstairs without Rose Buck is by definition a lesser experience.
Another factor is the dialogue – characters have started delivering speeches at, rather than talking to, each other.
If/when the show returns for a third run, the scripts could do with feeling a little more ‘human conversation’ and a little less ‘lecture hall discourse’.
