I’ve managed to put the brilliance of Batman aside for the week and picked up a copy of Heroes over Europe and Need for Speed Shift. Having decided against the rubber ruddered Stumovik: Birds of Prey I thought i’d give the arcade stylings of Heroes over Europe a go.
In contrast to Sturmovik, Heroes is more playable with a controller than a joystick, in-fact I seem to do better without it than with… trying the same with Sturmovik quickly became a “stall fest”. But to compare the two is to compare chalk to cheese… Heroes is pure arcade fun that while doing things by the book tries throwing a few new ideas into the mix with the inclusion of “Ace Kill” a game feature that sees game motion slowed right down allowing the player to fire off a one shot kill.
The flying physics are basic, but fun. If the game lacks anything it’s views, if you are not a fan of third person fliers this game probably wont be for you… I managed to get by ok… but I would have liked the option!
The user interface is a bright, vibrant take on historic 1940′s war propaganda posters. The aircraft are beautifully modeled and whilst perhaps not as detailed and Sturmovik are thankfully lacking their “die cast” shimmer. Whilst being a blast some of the later levels depend on you stringing together Ace Kills before the enemy destroy there targets… it can be a bit of a steep curve!
Need for Speed: Shift
Although I’ve only spent 20 minutes on the full version of Need for Speed: Shift I enjoyed every minute, it’s a slick, fun and addictive entry into the over populated racing game genre. I do however lament the loss of the old Need for Speed games that saw you racing through original and creative courses… please, please someone give us a racing game with courses set alongside a Mediterranean coast, the english countryside or the crumbling and toppling rocks of the Nevada Desert. I’m fed up of racing around Silverstone and the Nurburgring.
