The BBC has withdrawn earlier claims that Doctor Who is too scary for Children under 8 years old.
Responding to a small number of complaints following the transmission of episode three a BBC statement said that the show was not “intended for the youngest of children” and that “it would be a programme which 8 year olds and above would enjoy watching with their parents”.
That statement was picked up on by sections of the mainstream press including The Guardan.
However today a BBC spokesman said the initial response was “a mistake” adding “We leave it to parents’ discretion to ultimately decide.”
The change in advice is also reported on The Times website.
The BBC1 airing of the show generated 91 complaints. Early figures suggest the episode was watched by 8.3 million viewers.
