The Register has had a look at the latest version of Google’s Android operating system (OS), known as Ice Cream Sandwich.
They seem pretty impressed, especially with the look of the new software which leaves them wondering if the customised user interfaces some makers user to differentiate their handsets are still needed.
Some sites have compiled lists of handsets which could get the update, a close read of these lists suggests the update will be limited in many cases only to 2011 models.
Even if your handset is due an update, you could be waiting some time.
As a quick check of operator support forums show, some users are still waiting for updates to earlier versions.
Unlike Apple which rolls out OS updates across directly, Android updates tend to require the network operator to roll them out after both they and the manufacturers have made changes to the core software.
Of course, there are ways to update your phone to versions released by the handset manufacturers and Android community but, although it’s not a very difficult process, it is something many casual users may find daunting.
