Not strictly Doctor Who related but we’re sure of interest to many of our younger readers, CBBC is to provide the entertainment at a very special party celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s 80th birthday at Buckingham Palace this summer.
HM The Queen attends the annual ‘Trooping the Colour’ parade
According to a BBC Press Release:
“The Queen has 1,000 tickets to give away to children around the UK.
Each ticket allows two children and one adult (parent, grandparent or guardian) into the Palace for a spectacular day.
The Queen has invited CBBC to provide the entertainment for the day which will be bursting with events featuring some of Britain’s much-loved literary characters.
JK Rowling is delighted to be joining Harry Potter on the day: “I can think of no better way to mark The Queen’s 80th birthday than with a party for children at the Palace with some of the best loved characters from childrens literature.
“Harry and I are very much looking forward to attending, particularly as we understand that, despite his alleged membership of the aristocracy, Lord Voldemort has not been invited.”
Harry is just one of many favourite literary characters to be invited to the birthday party.
CBBC’s feisty Tracy Beaker, Mowgli from The Jungle Book, the Gruffalo and two special bears – Paddington Bear and Winnie the Pooh – will be there to join in the fun.
The day will end with a spectacular show for the whole family, and the nation will be able to watch it live on the BBC.
The show is an exciting mix of childrens stories.
Sophie Dahl will be playing herself in the BFG. This timeless children’s classic was written by her grandfather Roald Dahl and the main character Sophie was based on her.
The show will host many more celebrities along with more literary favourites including Mary Poppins, the White Rabbit, Captain Hook and the Royal Ballet.
All children (4 to 14 years old) living in the UK will be invited to apply from the 1 February through a national ballot by logging onto the CBBC website – bbc.co.uk/cbbc.
Closing dates for applications is 28 February 2006.
