Channel Four’s long-running game show Countdown is now available on your iPad at the special offer price of £1.79 and, unlike certain other apps we’ve played with lately, it’s well worth every penny.
The usual TV rounds – word, number and conundrum – are present and correct in this app version of the contest which can be played by one or two players.
Those with a mate to play against can either pass the iPad between them or, if they happen to know a friend with one of Apple’s magical tablets, play head to head via bluetooth.
Sitting watching the TV version it’s always been easy to shout out answers but, even with nothing other than pride at stake, its easy to feel the pressure as your ability to spell and count slips away.
From the earliest days of computer games, TV tie-ins are often shallow, unfulfilling exercises in lifting money from the wallets of unsuspecting buyers. The Countdown app is as far removed from those cynical cash-ins as it’s possible to imagine, it’s well coded, feels like the TV show and is highly addictive.
