Covert Affairs – one of TV’s best kept secrets – returned for a third series last week with an explosive season opener.
Starring Coyote Ugly’s Piper Perabo, the series follows the adventures of glamorous spy Annie Walker who poses as a museum researcher to explain her globetrotting on behalf of the CIA.
More fun than Nikita, the show makes Magnum look gritty but it’s relentlessly enjoyable thanks largely to the energy of Perabo and Christopher Gorham who plays HQ contact, Auggie Anderson.
Audiences of a certain age will find the series reminiscent of the great spy shows of the 60’s – quick shots of foreign locations, Canadian locales doubling for far away places and bad guys who are easy to spot.
If Napoleon Solo or Jason King popped up it’d seem perfectly natural.
If you like your spy dramas packed with charm and enthusiasm rather than the militarism that’s become the staple of such shows, Covert Affairs is certain to impress.
Covert Affairs, Wednesdays 9pm on Really. Seasons 1 & 2 are available on DVD
