Kobo, the Canadian multi-platform ebook retailer, has announced the appointment of a European Director of Content – a move the company says demonstrates its commitment to European consumers.

Pieter Swinkels, formerly Associate Publisher of Netherlands publishing company De Bezige Bij, has been appointed as Director of Publisher and Industry Relations for Europe and will be responsible for acquiring new titles and new publishers across Europe.

Michael Tamblyn, Executive Vice President of Content, Sales and Merchandising at Kobo, said Swinkels had “a reputation throughout Europe and around the world for being an innovative, forward-thinking publisher” and said his passion for the eReading “combined with his in-depth experience and strong European relationships, makes him the perfect person to present Kobo’s global eReading service to the European publishing community.”

Kobo says European user levels are highest in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Netherlands and claims usage in Spain, Portugal and Italy is “quickly expanding”.

Swinkels said Kobo was “known internationally for its passion and dedication to delivering the best possible reading experience to customers” and declared himself to be “excited to bring my experience to Canada and become a part of that mission.”
