Today’s Independent reports the BBC have commissioned Russell T Davies to make an “adult post-watershed spin-off” of Doctor Who entitled ‘Torchwood’.
The series is to feature a crack team investigating alien activities in contemporary Britain and will star John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness.
Speaking to the paper Russell said the show “will be a dark, clever, wild, sexy, British crime/sci-fi paranoid thriller cop show with a sense of humour – the X Files meets This Life”
The series will air in Summer 2006 on the digital channel, BBC3. Channel controller Stuart Murphy said the show was “a massive coup”.
Like Doctor Who, Torchwood will be filmed in and around Cardiff and will feature more ‘adult’ content.
The paper quotes Murphy as saying “The people have affairs with one another. There will be sex and swearing, I assume. I’m quite relaxed about that, it will be post-watershed and Russell can do it in a funny and sexy way.”
The official series site is now displaying a ‘Torchwood’ splash page comprising of the word on the Doctor Who logo background.
