Oh dear, Being Human has morphed into an unfunny comedy

When production teams aren’t sure where to take a successful franchise they almost always plump for over the top and unfunny comedy – see Beverly Hill Cop 3, Transformers 2.

Sadly on the strength of tonight’s opening episode, it looks like Being Human has suffered the same terrible fate.

Last year the production team were faced with having to recast the entire series, a task they lived up to with deserved acclaim.

But the deft touch which allowed the show to survive the loss of Russell Tovey and Lenora Crichlow seems to have been misplaced between seasons.

In place of the atmospheric and skilful scripting that was the hallmark of earlier years, tonight we got served up a mix of gurning and near-slapstick rounded off with a predictable ‘reveal’.

The biggest, perhaps only, reason for optimism is the presence of a sadly underused Phil Davis as Captain Hatch.

Let’s hope tonight’s episode turns out to be a mere blip and the the show quickly returns to form.
