Fictionwise, one of the web’s first eBook retailers and a favourite source of books for many early digital readers, is to close next month.
First launched in 2000, the site predates all current eReaders and offered books for multiple formats for a range of devices, including PDAs.
In recent years the eBook market has centred around two formats – Amazon’s Kindle format used exclusively by it’s own readers and EPUB which is used by all other major retailers.
In 2009 Fictionwise was purchased by US bookseller Barnes & Noble which now has its own NOOK eReader – recently launched in the UK – and tablet devices.
Customers in the UK and US will be able to migrate their Fictionwise libraries to a new NOOK library, giving them continued access to their books.
