I’m a big fan of Five’s The Hotel Inspector so was pretty disappointed when presenter Ruth Watson left the show after three series.
Her replacement, Alex Polizzi, did a good job on the subsequent series but I prefer Ruth’s no-nonsense approach so I was cheered at it was announced she was to present a broadly similar show for Channel 4, this time looking at country houses whose owners need to make the properties pay for themselves,
After a few weeks of watching Country House Rescue, I’ve discovered a small flaw with the format – owners of lavish country piles are a much less endearing breed than struggling hoteliers.
Whereas I’d hope the hoteliers would listen to Ruth’s advice long enough to turn their ailing businesses around, I find myself pretty much unmoved by the ‘plight’ of people unimaginative enough to turn around the country estate they were lucky enough to inherit.
As the recession kicks in, how long people will want to watch chinless wonders bemoaning their fate?
