Sony Ericsson Launch Short Film Competition

August 2, 2008 - Staff@seenituk

To celebrate the launch of their C902 Cyber-shot mobile phone (pictured) Sony Ericsson are teaming up with Oscar nominated film director Mike Figgis to create ‘Life Captured’ – a pioneering new short film made entirely out of mobile phone photos taken by everyday people.

Anyone who wants to showcase their life is invited to to submit a storyboard consisting of five mobile phone snapshots. National winners from 19 participating countries across Europe (including the UK), the Middle East and Africa will be chosen and briefed by Mike Figgis to shoot their part of the new ‘Life Captured’ film with the new phone.

Figgis is best-known for his experimental and ground-breaking techniques in film-making and has won seven film awards and been nominated for 14 others including two Oscars for Leaving Las Vegas.

The director says making a film out of still images “was a challenging brief” but says he was “instantly inspired by Sony Ericsson’s aim to reveal an unseen side of life across so many countries.”

“Mobile phone photographs are increasingly being used as an immediate and exciting way to capture life as it happens. This intriguing film will compare every day happenings and personal moments, providing a window into people’s private worlds previously unseen.”

Each national winner will have four weeks to answer the brief using the C902 cameraphone, Figgis will then piece together the images to create ‘Life Captured’.

Five ‘Outstanding Achievers’ will win a VIP trip for them and a friend to attend the film’s red carpet premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in London in October 2008.

Stefan Streit, Head of Marketing Western Europe at Sony Ericsson, said: “It’s an honour to be working with a film director of Mike’s calibre. ‘Life Captured’ will challenge the boundaries of traditional photography, and showcase to the world an emerging form of film-making using a mobile phone.

The film is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for aspiring film-makers, photographers and visual artists to work with a world-renowned director and have their work showcased to top industry figures.”
