The Day of the Triffids – BBC Classic Radio Sci-Fi

July 2, 2006 - Staff@seenituk

This is the third of the initial wave of releases in the new BBC Classic Radio Sci-Fi range which hits the shops this week.

Possibly his most famous work, John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids has been lovingly dramatised by Giles Cooper in this 1968 recording which stars Gary Watson and Barbara Shelley.

As with ‘Aliens in the Mind‘ (also released this month) this is a full cast six-part drama.

Considering that it’s almost 40 years old the sound quality on this release is outstanding, every line of dialogue is crisp and clean and every nuance perfectly audible.

Genuinely atmospheric this recording captures the full horror and tension of the book. The iconic moments of the story, such as when the masses are rendered blind and as the Triffids go on the move, are gloriously brought to life.

In the early episodes much of the horror comes from the reaction of the characters, such as the scene where one tells of how a mother gassed her blind offspring.

The original continuity links make for an amusing glimpse back in time as each episode is introduced with the words “From London we present…” in finest BBC received pronunciation!

The version of the recording presented here is the overseas sales version.

To accommodate the insertion of adverts by overseas radio stations each episode had approximately 2 minutes of material cut which has been included as a series of bonus tracks on the third disc.
