Legendary horror film maker John Carpenter returns with The Ward, a classy horror yarn about Kristen (Amber Heard), an institutionalised young woman who is haunted by a deadly ghost.
The bare, locked corridors and rooms of a psych ward are the perfect setting for a horror yarn and Carpenter knows exactly how to exploit them to full effect.
This film has everything you’d hope for – spine chilling music, broody slow pans over the hospital’s exterior and creepy, lerry staff who no self-respecting genre fan will want to trust.
Carpenter milks the setting to the max – claims of intruders are met with enforced doses of medication and shock treatment from cynical, weary staff trained to disbelieve the claims.
When it comes, the first death is noisy, gruesome and very effectively realised. Even the most seasoned of horror watchers will struggle not to flinch.
What follows is an exhilarating and chilling journey into the darker corners of the human mind with an outcome few will see coming.
A great classic horror from of the genre’s true greats.
