BBC One was the place for drama lovers to hang out on Thursday night when the channel served up a 2 hour feast of well written, delightfully performed contemporary drama.
First up was school-based Waterloo Road which delivered some violent consequences for Brett after he was caught messing around with newlywed Chlo last week.
The revelation that Chlo’s ‘saviour’ may not be quite the nice lady she appeared to be might have been pretty obvious the moment the character arrived on screen but this was a rare slip from a show which consistently manages to avoid telegraphing major plot points.
Then at 9.00 Jimmy McGovern’s The Street returned with a hard hitting story starring David Thewlis as identical twins, one of whom, Harry. dies leading to Joe, the surviving brother, taking over his life.
This was powerful stuff, a dark, twisted version of It’s a Wonderful Life in which Joe came to realise how few people really cared for him but how much his mother, wife and children did.
When Joe’s mother tumbled what he’d done her reaction – instantly blaming her daughter-in-law for giving her son a bad home life – was both shocking and touching.
