The UK Government has announced a wide-ranging public consultation on the UK’s new civil space strategy.
Science and Innovation Minister Malcolm Wicks said he wanted to inspire “children to become our future world-beating scientists and Nobel Prize winners” adding that the nation’s youth “are being entranced by Doctor Who and electronic games consoles just like the previous generation was by R2D2 and C3PO. Space is a great way to excite children about the importance of British science.”
Whilst not quite on the scale of the Guinevere One space project seen in the 2005 Christmas Special ‘The Christmas Invasion’ the UK space industry has a turnover of 4.8bn and is an acknowledged leader in developing small satellites and in robotics.
The consultation has been launched on the BNSC website and will be open for 12 weeks.
The BNSC has a regular magazine – space:uk magazine – which can be downloaded from their site.
