YouView: reaping the benefits of broadcaster backing?

December 6, 2012 - Martin Hoscik@seenituk

I love it when predictions come true, especially when they’re my own.

A few months back I suggested advertising for YouView would quickly ramp up its visibility, and it seems I was prettly close to spot-on.

In the past few days YouView has managed to wangle itself mentions on Channel 4’s Stephen Fry: Gadget Man, Channel 5’s Gadget Show and now its very own mini-episode of Hollyoaks.

And that’s in addition to the service’s TV and poster ads, TalkTalk’s slightly vague sponsorship of the X-Factor, a cameo in NOW TV’s own adverts and mentions on Channel 4’s on-screen plugs for 4oD.

Of course, it’s not all been good news – the row over the YouView trademark has generated acres of less rosy coverage but even that will have brought the brand to the attention of new audiences.

Legal blips aside, it seems the broadcasters are committed to ramping up their pet service’s visibility in time for Christmas when families might just be looking for a new shiny box to watch their festive specials on.

How long before we see the residents of Emmerdale running a speed test to see if their remote rural village gets the 3Mbp/s recommended minimum broadband speed to watch EastEnders via YouView’s backwards EPG?
